It’s Gonna Get Weird

where the weird internet things are
There are areas on the internet where you wonder why does this have its own website. Those weird sites keep viewers fused in on what is going on.

The sites I’ll list today do have a sense of weirdness, but not in a cringey way.

Is My Computer On

The question raised in the name of the site is answered on its page. Before I continue on with the list, I need you to determine if your computer is on.

OMFG DOGS

OMFGDOGS

(Flashing colors warning) This site is a one-page setup of tiny animated dogs running across the screen. The dogs will forever run with repeating music playing. In the background, lines of “OMFGDOGS” passes by in a rainbow style of colors. Watch those little things go here: OMFGDOGS.info

Procatinator

procatstinator

Procatinator is a site filled with gifs of cats being cats. To go along with each gif is a song that fits with it. Every time a viewer would go on to the site or hit the “show me another cat” button, a randomly selected cat gif and song comes up. Jam out with the cats here: procatinator.com

Bees Bees Bees

beesbeesbees

Don’t let the name fool you. There are bees on this site, but Oprah releases them in a hilarious way. The gif comes from a video played on Conan where Oprah originally gave the audience cars, but the cars were replaced with bees. The longer you watch, the funnier it gets. Go ahead and get your bees here: beesbeesbees.com

The Last Page of the Internet

The last web page does exist, and I have found it. The last page contains a short message for those who find it. What is the last page of the internet?

These weird little sites are great for easing the hollowed mind that finals create.

Birdman’s Respeck

respeck finalsWho would have known verbally attacking radio show hosts would make you into a meme.

The Birdman meme started off on April 22 after Birdman went on the “Breakfast Club” radio show and repeatedly said, “Put some respect on my name.” Birdman then accused the show of making fun of his name and demanded respect for his name. After the long mumbles and foul language that Birdman said, he refused the rest of his interview on the show and walked off the studio (with his six-man crew). Here’s the video (warning: language).

The members on the Breakfast Club speculated that Birdman’s anger could have been caused by jokes on the show directed to him by Rick Ross and Trick Daddy back in 2015.

The internet took charge on Birdman’sRespeck mj.PNG tirade starting with Mrs_Roblane’s Instagram post. The original post involves a nsfw (language) video that can be viewed on Instagram.

When the meme is used, it normally has “respect” spelled as “respeck” in a way of mocking Birdman’s pronunciation of “respect.” The meme also criticizes Birdman’s quote from the interview, “Y’all finished or y’all done?”

With finals rolling around, students will find ways to procrastinate through social media, and it’d be great to understand a trending meme.

Google’s Searching Secrets

googlesearches.png

Google is all about helping people through the extensive search engine it is. Google does offer its own fun secrets though. The curiosity and fun in these secrets can keep the mind busy.

Google in 1998

Ever wanted to remember or see what Google looked like back in the day? By searching “Google in 1998,” searchers can view that piece of history of Google.

Atari Breakout

The classic game of bouncing a ball into blocks to break them lives on through Google. For this secret to work, you would have to do an image search. Once you’re on the image search screen, search “Atari Breakout,” and the images will change to play Breakout. When the game is over, Google will start a new game through a random image search to keep it going.

Pac-Man

On May 22nd, 2010, Pac-Man’s 30th anniversary was celebrated in a unique way with Google. Google created a doodle that allowed users to play Pac-Man just like how it was made 36 years ago (except with the Google logo in the middle). Just Google search “Pac-Man” and click on the one that says “Pac-Man Doodle”.

All of Google’s doodles are accessible by the way. The doodles could be searched or found on the “doodle” page.

Zerg Rush

A zerg rush is a gaming term used to describe a player’s overpowering attack on an opponent. It was mainly used in StarCraft. Google took the opportunity of the term and made a game out of it. After users search “zerg rush,” the Google logo will break apart and start attacking the search results. The logo can be taken out by clicking out on the separate letters of the logo, but more and more will come. The search results will be attacked until the page is empty.

Do a Barrel Roll

“Do a Barrel Roll” comes from the game Star Fox. The phrase meant to roll the fighter plane in an evasive maneuver to avoid taking damage. The phrase is referred throughout the gaming community as a meme. When “Do a barrel roll” is searched, the screen will do a 360 degree rotation.

Askew

OCD people beware, this one will drive you crazy. By searching “askew,” searchers will get to a search result page that is askew (slightly tilted to the right). Seeing the askewed screen gives me an uneasy feeling, but I still get amused by it.

All of these Google Search tricks are bound to keep the busy college student mind well entertained and not worried about stress.

Cats and Dogs

moonshine in drawerThe silly things that animals do amuses us all, and it’s not as simple as going through only one video or image. No animal has dominated the internet like cats and dogs.

Cats and dogs have ruled the internet for years. People have drooled over the cats and dogs

memes and videos found especially through Facebook. The amount of time people spend viewing these images and videos is outstanding. If you were to just search the term “cat” or “dog” on YouTube, videos will appear with millions and millions of views.

The internet is so flooded with cat and dog memes that sub-memes of cats and dogs exists! I’ll go over the two of the biggest cat and dog memes.

Grumpy Cat

Grumpy Cat has to be the biggest cat meme there is. One simple

image of a cat’s face permanently disgruntled with the world won the hearts of many people. The meme generally focuses on strong dislike amongst peers and the world. Grumpy Cat grew to be more than just an internet image, but a merchandisable being. The merchandise obtained more than just T-shirts though, but costumes, plush dolls, ornaments, a book, and a “Grumppuccino” drink.

Doge

(Doh-ge) is an image of a shiba inu that is viewed as internal monologues of the dog. The

photogenic shiba face is usually photoshopped on other images, or the doge image is filled with “much monologue”.

Students can get lost in the viewing of cats and dogs as long as it is funny and keeps students away from work.

Pretend it’s Cards Against Humanity!

CAH.pngA popular trend among college students is the need to play the NSFW/inappropriate card game, Cards Against Humanity. The game itself with Amazon Prime is $25, and that’s not including the expansion packs. There is a way to play it for free though.

Pretend You’re Xyzzy is a Cards Against Humanity clone, but better. Pretend You’re Xyzzy is an online-based game that supports the original Cards Against Humanity and more. The free online game gives users the options to either join a game with random people, create a game and have random people join, or create a private game with friends.

How does one invite friends to play though? In order to get friends in a game, send them the url from the “create game” screen. Once the friends click the link, they will type up their nickname and will be placed into your game.

When creating a game, users are opened to many options to customize their games. Customizable options include: adjusting the score for amount of black cards won, the amount of players in the game, and what in-game expansions to play in the game (my favorite is the “Box Expansion”).

Remember that “and more” I said previously? Pretend You’re Xyzzy allows custom cards created by other people to be used in game. Cardcast offers players to create custom decks that can be used on Pretend You’re Xyzzy. Players can search through Cardcast to find extra packs to be put into the game. Once the packs are found, the host of the game would type in the chat “/addcardcast (the code given on the created card pack),” and the created packs will be playable.

Pretend You’re Xyzzy is an excellent and free way to play Cards Against Humanity. The online capabilities allow friends that don’t live near to play along as well.

Don’t forget that this game is very graphic. Some decks found on Cardcast are just as graphic or worse.

What’s the Size of…

True Size Of.png

That blue highlight is Greenland compared to the size of Africa.

The curiosity for the size of one thing compared to another is something that has always existed in our minds. Luckily, there’s a site that allows you to compare the sizes of countries and states together.

The True Size Of… lets users interact with countries and states in order to compare the size of each of them. Users can type in the country or state they wish to compare, and then that area will be highlighted on the map. Once the highlighted map appears, left-click and hold the highlighted area and drag it anywhere on the map. Yes, there can be multiple highlights on the map. Want 24 different colored highlights of Sweden? Go do it. Right-click to delete the highlighted area when it’s no longer needed. Users can also grab the little Google Street View  guy on the bottom-right of the site. The yellow figure can be placed down on the map to go into Google Street View.

Another neat trick about this site is that it takes in the effect of the Earth’s roundness. Flat maps, like the common Mercator, have the continents distorted and wrongly sized. IFL Science goes into depth about how the Mercator map doesn’t show actual sizes. Buzzfeedblue posted a video explaining and showing the difference between the map and actual sizes.

The True Size Of… is a great way to kill time with curiosity. Students could also use this in projects or to prove someone else wrong. Go ahead and see how big Antarctica really is. Overall, this site is helpful, and fun to mess around with!

Where is My Mouse Pointer?

place pointerWho doesn’t get tired of a website trying to figure out where a mouse pointer is?

Pointer Pointer uses random pictures found online to indicate where your mouse pointer is locatepointing pointerd. Inside of that white-outlined box is the answers to your curiosity. Place the mouse pointer anywhere in the box, and a picture will appear of someone pointing at that pointer. These pictures (or at least the ones I’ve discovered so far) are photos from actual people, not computer generated images.
I have spent so many minutes on this site just placing my mouse on different locations to see a new picture telling me where my pointer is. Playing around on Pointer Pointer is a blast because you keep on wondering what kind of pictures will appear and how much difference does the slightest movement make. Pointer Pointer takes my mind off of that homework stress. But as of now, I have to know what picture will come up in this spot.

The Death of the Leonardo DiCaprio Meme

vanityfair

Memes are a great way to kill time, but they often don’t die; they just fade away. The Leonardo DiCaprio Oscar meme will have one last hurrah before it fades into the internet.

Leonardo DiCaprio has been nominated and won many awards for his acting, but one awards ceremony brought internet fame to the celebrity. Leo had been nominated for multiple Oscars throughout his acting career, but unlike the other awards he’s been nominated for, Leo didn’t win an Oscar. The internet caught on to Leo’s lack of an Oscar a few years ago and retaliated with memes.

The 2016 Oscars happened this Sunday. Leonardo DiCaprio won his first Oscar, and so came the death of his Oscar-less meme.

A new Leo Oscar meme emerges from the ashes though. This new one is about him finally earning his Oscar.

True Staggering Beauty

staggering beautyThe internet is full of gems that are intended to just entertain and waste time. Staggering Beauty is one of those sites that throw great interactivity into it, and all it takes is a wiggle.

Staggering Beauty is a creature who is beyond the black line that is perceived. A quick warning, in order to unlock the next form of the creature, there will be fast flashing images, colors, and loud sounds. A few simple flicks of the mouse cursor will cause Staggering Beauty to wiggle violently and the colorful beauty begins. This site, believe it or not, actually makes you want to find out different wiggles that’ll be entertaining.

One of my favorite ways to wiggle is by bringing my cursor to the middle of the left half of the screen, and moving the mouse gently up and down. I’ll be honest, as I was writing this, I was messing with Staggering Beauty. Staggering Beauty is very addicting.

Scholarship Shakedown

scholarship bit

Scholarships are one of the greatest gifts college students receive. We all know that most scholarships require work to be thrown to prove you deserve it. When searching for these great gifts online, it can be a sketchy business because sometimes there’s no proof to show it can be a legit scholarship.

Luckily, I know a couple of sites that are huge in helping search for scholarships.

Cappex.com

Cappex goes very in depth with their scholarship searching. After the usual name and address stuff, the site will ask questions of your high school and some accomplishments done in high school. Some other high school related questions is a huge list of activities that could’ve been done in high school.

Then the next set of questions ask about how college is going and your academic year. Questions asked after that would help in reaching out for scholarships with some extra requirements that fit certain answers. Those follow up questions can range from ancestry to disabilities.

Once all of the questions are completed, Cappex gives out a list of scholarships that apply to the information given, the amount of money offered in the scholarship, the difficulty in applying, and the competition for each scholarship.

FastWeb.com

FastWeb has a scholarship search questionnaire almost like cappex. The student activities section gives out more options of hobbies that the student might do such as being a non-smoker, hunting, and other nationally known clubs. Another difference in the questionnaire is that FastWeb even includes fraternities and sororities as well.

Scholarship deadlines are featured on the homepage to remind students of the time remaining and the other scholarships that are out there.

Another way to save money on tuition and fees is by going to your major’s department and find out if they offer scholarships that are specifically designed for your major.
